Adaptive Surfing 2.0|Vast × Taiwan Wheelchair Association: Making the Ocean Accessible for Everyone

In 2025, Vast once again teamed up with the Taiwan Wheelchair Association to host the Adaptive Surfing 2.0 event.
If last year was our first attempt to bring wheelchair users into the waves, this year, the ocean’s embrace became deeper, longer, and filled with even more smiles. For many, it was not just their first time surfing—it was their very first time standing on a beach, feeling the salty breeze on their faces.

Bigger, Better, All-Day Experience

Compared to our inaugural event in 2024, this year’s edition expanded into a full-day experience, with both morning and afternoon sessions. This allowed more participants to join without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
We brought together 8 professional surf coaches and over 150 dedicated volunteers, forming a solid safety net for every participant—helping guide wheelchairs to the water, stabilizing surfboards in the waves, and making sure every ride was both safe and unforgettable.

Upgraded Seated Tandem Surfboard: Safety Meets Joy

One of this year’s biggest breakthroughs was the enhancement of our custom-built tandem seated surfboard.
This specially designed board allows a coach and participant to surf together, ensuring safety while maintaining the exhilarating speed and freedom of riding a wave. The board features improved stability, an ergonomically designed seat, reinforced straps, and extra support points—allowing even first-time surfers to feel secure and confident.

This innovation is not only a milestone for adaptive surfing in Taiwan, but also a symbol of the core value behind accessible sportseveryone deserves the right to experience the joy of movement.

First Time at the Beach, First Time Surfing

For many wheelchair users, this was not just their first surfing experience—it was truly their first time visiting the ocean.
One participant laughed, “So this is what seawater feels like,” while another shouted from the crest of a wave, “I really did it!”
For our volunteers, these genuine moments of joy were the most beautiful waves of the day. For us, they were a reminder that this event is more than a sport—it’s an invitation to a whole new world.

Accessible Sports, Starting with the Sea

We believe the ocean belongs to everyone, and waves have no boundaries.
Adaptive Surfing 2.0 is more than an annual event—it’s a statement that with thoughtful design, teamwork, and community support, people with disabilities can enjoy the ocean just like anyone else.
This movement reflects the global rise of adaptive surfing and continues to push forward ocean accessibility in Taiwan, inspiring more communities to understand, support, and embrace inclusive sports.

Looking Ahead

Our vision is for wheelchair surfing to become more than a once-a-year event—it should be a sport that’s accessible year-round.
With more volunteer training, better equipment, and stronger community resources, we hope to see more beaches equipped with accessible entry points, so people with mobility challenges can walk, roll, or ride right into the waves.

Because the ocean is for everyone.

Surf Exploration Trip: Australia, Here We Come!

"Surf Exploration Trip" has always been a signature activity for our brand. This time, we ventured to Australia, a surfing paradise surrounded by the ocean. Starting from Noosa Beach in Queensland, we journeyed south to Bondi Beach in Sydney, New South Wales. Along this over 1,000-kilometer route, we explored numerous world-renowned surf spots and sought out the classic Australian delicacy, "fish and chips." Throughout the trip, we also captured photos of our apparel products and documented the beauty of Australia and its local surf culture.

Post-Pandemic Island Surfing: We Are Together in the Waves.

VAST's Post-Pandemic Surfing Island Tour: Riding the Waves and Sharing Love

Sunlight shines down, the sea breeze gently blows, and the VAST team members, filled with a passion for the ocean, set off on a five-day surfing tour around the island, driving a Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles T6. This was not just a journey chasing the waves, but an action of love and sharing.

First Stop: Daxi Elementary School in Toucheng, Yilan

We started our journey from Taipei and made our first stop at Daxi Elementary School in Toucheng, Yilan. We donated surfboards filled with hope to the school, hoping that the children could also find their own happiness among the waves.

Second Stop: Donghe Elementary School in Taitung

Heading south along the east coast, we arrived at Donghe Elementary School in Taitung. We gave the children practical backpacks and comfortable branded clothing, hoping they would feel warmth and care on their path of growth.

Third Stop: Kenting

Kenting's Jialeshui is a surfer's paradise. Here, we enjoyed the warm sunshine of southern Taiwan and the endless waves to the fullest.

Fourth Stop: Tainan

The Fisherman's Island Beach in Tainan has a unique charm. We rode the waves under the setting sun, feeling the leisure and romance of this city.

Fifth Stop: Return to Taipei

After five days of traveling, we returned to Taipei, carrying with us a wealth of memories and emotions. This island-wide surfing trip not only allowed us to experience the beauty of Taiwan's coastline, but also made us deeply feel the joy of sharing.

We are grateful to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles for sponsoring this trip, making it easy and comfortable for the VAST team to complete this island tour.

VAST will continue to uphold its love for the ocean, spreading the joy of surfing and the spirit of sustainability to more people.
